The first Pokemon characters were created in 1996 by Satoshi Tajiri (田尻 智) and character designer Ken Sumigori (杉森建).

Created after the layout, the genga is an original Japanese animation production drawing representing a key pose from a sequence. The genga is drawn by one of the anime's chief animators.

Done in graphite pencil and colored pencils on animation paper
